Advanced Services

Under the pharmacy NHS contract we offer the following advanced service/s:

Medicines Use Review - The aim of the MUR is to improve the patient's knowledge and use of medicines, for example-

  • carrying out a medicines-use review with patients who are on regular long-term medication or certain conditions eg Asthma, Diabetes etc
  • discussing patients' medication with them , developing their understanding of the medicine and its use, explaining possible side effects and how it should be used for maximum benefit
  • attempting to find a solution with patients for any medication problems they experience eg swallowing medicine
  • providing a report to each patient's GP, including any recommendations for action
  • carrying out such reviews on a regular basis (for example, every 12 months) with patients who have been using the pharmacy for the dispensing of their prescriptions for at least the previous three months.

At least 70% of all MURs undertaken by each pharmacy in each year from October 2011 should be on patients within the national target groups. These are:

  • patients taking high risk medicines (NSAIDs like Ibuprofen, Diclofenac or Naproxen; Anticoagulants; Diuretics; and anti-platelets)
  • patients recently discharged from hospital who had changes made to their medicines while they were in hospital (MUR should take place within four-eight weeks of discharge)

  • Asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
